Stronger Gun Control Laws

Spruill isn’t afraid to take on the NRA. He supports laws letting authorities take guns away from domestic abusers and others who make violent threats. He’s passed requirements for criminal and mental health background checks before all gun sales in Virginia. And he supports a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity clips, and ghost guns.

Defending a Woman’s Right To Choose

Senator Spruill has been a champion for reproductive freedom throughout his 34 years of public service. In 2012, he helped defeat Republican attempts to force women to undergo invasive ultrasound procedures. With Roe v Wade overturned, we need him now more than ever to defeat Republican attempts to take away women’s choices, and target women and their doctors with prosecution.

Protecting Voting Rights

Spruill stands up to Republicans who spread Trump’s lies about the 2020 election. He blocked several attempts by Virginia Republicans to pass laws that threaten the voting rights of minorities, seniors, the disabled, and the poor. He voted to allow all Virginians to vote by mail and to expand early voting. He helped pass a law requiring a strict review process for any changes local jurisdictions want to make to voting procedures – so we can stop Republicans from attempting to use the rules to suppress the vote.

Supporting Public Education

Spruill fights Republican attempts to shift taxpayer money from public schools to private schools. He works to improve teacher salaries, has secured funding for school construction, and holds the line on tuition rates at our public colleges and universities.

Expanding Affordable Healthcare

In 2018, Senator Spruill helped lead the successful fight to expand Medicaid under the Obamacare plan, providing coverage to thousands more low-income Virginians. Now, he’s standing up to Glenn Youngkin and Republican legislators who want to roll back Obamacare.

An Environmental Champion

Praised by environmental groups, Spruill is Chair of a key energy subcommittee. He helped stop the Republican attempt to roll back the 2020 Virginia Clean Economy Act, the historic legislation that
is transitioning Virginia to using clean, renewable energy.

A Voice for Seniors

He works to protect seniors from financial scams, and those who are victims of abuse and neglect at nursing homes. In 2022, he sponsored the successful bill protecting the rights of seniors facing eviction from assisted living facilities.

Increasing the Minimum Wage

In 2020, Spruill helped pass legislation that would raise the Virginia minimum wage to $15 an hour. Hen then worked closely with organized labor to defeat the Republican bill that would have stopped the minimum wage increase.
